Spain\u2019s first ever pride parade was actually held in the famous street of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.laramblabarcelona.com\/en\/first-lgbt-parade-in-spain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Rambla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in 1977\u2014as an estimated 4,000 people protested against policies that punished non-binary individuals with imprisonment, fines, and detainment in psychiatric centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just two years later, those policies were abolished. Progress continued, and in 2005, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2005\/jun\/30\/gayrights.spain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same sex marriage became legal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country. The city\u2019s long-standing tradition of activism and advocacy has shaped it into one of the most queer-friendly places in Europe today.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LGBTQIA_communities_in_Barcelona\"><\/span>LGBTQIA+ communities in Barcelona<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona is home to a thriving and visible LGBTQIA+ community, with safe spaces and support networks designed to uplift, protect, and celebrate queer individuals, including young students like you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>LGBTI Centre<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the neighborhood of Sant Antoni lies the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ajuntament.barcelona.cat\/lgtbi\/en\/services\/barcelona-lgbti-centre\/the-centre\/objectives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona LGBTI Centre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a public space that provides information, assistance, and organized programs that promote and protect the LGBTQIA+ community. If you\u2019re looking for a safe space during your time in the city and don\u2019t know where to look, you can start here.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>PRIDE Barcelona<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pridebarcelona.org\/qui-som\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pride event in Barcelona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which we\u2019ll talk more about later) is one of the grandest and most recognized LGBTQIA+ events around the world. The committee behind it hosts events and organizes programs that start important conversations throughout the year as well. If you\u2019d like to get involved, they are always accepting applications for volunteers!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Panteresports<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you love staying active, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/panteresports.panteresgrogues.org\/en\/home-eng\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panteresports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers a safe and inclusive space in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonewall.org.uk\/news\/new-research-shows-many-lgbtq-people-still-dont-feel-welcome-in-sport-as-rainbow-laces-kicks-off\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world of sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Founded by the non-profit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panteresgrogues.org\/en\/home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panteres Grogues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this annual sports tournament takes place every September and features activities like beach volleyball, rugby, table tennis, and even yoga. It\u2019s a fantastic way to connect with Barcelona\u2019s queer community while embracing healthy competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LGBTQIA_reads_art_and_culture_in_Barcelona\"><\/span>LGBTQIA+ reads, art, and culture in Barcelona<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona\u2019s queer culture is known for its nightlife and parades, but it isn\u2019t limited to that. The city is also a hub for LGBTQIA+ literature, cultural projects, and contemporary art exhibits. Here\u2019s where to start:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>LGBTQIA+ bookshops in Barcelona<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital books are all the rage today, but if you prefer your queer reads in print, Barcelona has some excellent bookstores you\u2019ll want to check out:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/libreriaantinous\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antinous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; An iconic bookshop dedicated to LGBTQIA+ literature, with a wide selection of books, zines, essays, and gems that you won\u2019t easily find elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_la_prole\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; A book store and publishing house focused on issues surrounding gender, LGBTQIA+, and racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.laraposacoop.org\/llibreriaonline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Raposa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; A feminist and LGBTQIA+ bookshop that offers not just plenty of reading materials, but also community events. They have a vegan bar, too!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Digital reads: Queer Mourning<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Mourning: Grieving at the Museum is a 100-page digital collection of texts, prayers, and reflections created by LGBTQIA+ activists and artists. It explores the technicalities of grief over the violence toward and suffering of queer individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re curious about the often overlooked histories within queer communities, this might just be up your alley. You may access the book through the website of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.cat\/en\/queer-mourning-grieving-museum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Museu Nacional d&#8217;Art de Catalunya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Queer-focused art exhibit<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently on display at the Museu d&#8217;Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) until October 2025 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macba.cat\/en\/exhibitions\/carlos-motta-pleas-of-resistance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pleas of Resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an exhibit by Colombian artist Carlos Motta. The exhibit shows the artist\u2019s relationship with politics and social movements, particularly on gender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art spaces like these aren\u2019t just for students doing a Creative Arts internship\u2014they\u2019re for anyone interested in how art intersects with activism, identity, and community. From June 19 to 20, a special program hosted by Motta will accompany the exhibit, featuring live art, performances, and music celebrating queer voices. Check it out while you\u2019re there!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LBTQIA_events_in_Barcelona\"><\/span>LBTQIA+ events in Barcelona<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona definitely knows how to celebrate inclusivity\u2014and it shows through the city\u2019s jampacked LGBTQIA+ event calendar!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Barcelona Pride<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona Pride is a grand celebration that lasts for weeks. It includes workshops, live performances, exhibitions, other exciting programs, and the famous unity march.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pridebarcelona\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barcelona Pride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is happening between June 28th and July 19th this 2025, with the march scheduled on the last day. If you\u2019re doing a summer internship in Barcelona, you\u2019ve come at the best time. And if you\u2019re on a Fashion internship, get ready\u2014the creative and extravagant outfits people wear to Pride are an absolute spectacle you won\u2019t want to miss!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i>Circuit Festival<\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community doesn\u2019t end with Barcelona Pride. In August, you can attend the internationally renowned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/circuitfestival.net\/barcelona\/info-help\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circuit Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival lasts for over a week. Here, you can not just find good music, but also be unapologetically yourself and meet members of the LGBTQIA+ community from all over the world! It\u2019s one of the world\u2019s best queer celebrations, however, unlike Barcelona Pride which you can attend mostly for free, you would need a ticket to attend Circuit Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire!! Mostra: LGTBI Film Festival<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mostrafire.com\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire!!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the first ever LGBTQIA+ film festival in Spain. Its carefully curated selection of films and documentaries provide both art and education on and for the queer community.
